Speaking of Reading: An Exercise in Expressive Language

As parents and educators we do our best to encourage our children to read. However, we sometimes overlook the benefits of talking to children about what they read. Send your students home with an assignment that will encourage them to talk about what they read and an informative article for parents.

What's included?
• An easy-to-read article for parents, discussing guidelines to consider when talking to children about books. Both color and black and white versions are available.
• 3 different homework assignments or "talk about cards" that encourage students to talk about books at home. These cards feature a checklist parents a kids can use together when a child shares information about something he or she has read.

School-based SLPs will especially like this printable because it offers an opportunity to communicate with parents and at the same time stay informed about your school's reading curriculum.

Note: The homework cards included in this printable are also available as part of The Strategy Center, booklets full of visual cues that Support Struggling Learners.
